‘Hotel 17 to the Met’

October 10, 2007

Title: How to get from Hotel 17 to the Metropolitan Museum of Art
Year: 2007
Medium: Ink pens, varying sizes
Format: 11″ x 15″
Class: Graphic Visualization (CDES 333) at CSU, Chico
Source: Google Maps for the grid of Manhattan and Brail.org for the subway directions (try it out! it’s pretty friggin’ cool)
Other Versions: ‘Hotel 17 to the Met, Animated’
Details: For this assignment we had to illustrate a map of how to get from one point to another from a bird’s-eye view while incorporating perspective. For the trained eyes out there, you may notice that my perspective is a little off on most of the little buildings. I got lazy with the ruler and started free-handing everything. Quite frankly, I got tired of drawing all those little cubes! I guess that’s what I get for picking Manhattan as my map… Also, eventually we will be adding gray marker to our maps to give them a bit more dimension and visual interest. I completely suck at using markers, so I guess it will be good practice for me ;)

Year: 2006
Medium: Graphite (6h to 9b)

Details: I figured since I’ve been drawing this idea over the last few years that I should post an “in-progress version” from time to time.

‘Heather’, In-progress, v.1

April 18, 2007

Title: ‘Heather’
Year: 2005 (started in 2004)
Medium: Graphite (4h to 6b)
Format: 14″ x 17″, work-in-progress
Source: Black & White photograph I’d taken of my niece, Heather, back in 1999

Details: This is my absolute favorite drawing I’ve ever done of a person. I really hope that someday I’ll have the motivation to finish it. When it’s finished, I’ll post the final piece along with the original photograph. And if you’re wondering what the tiny dark dots are in the upper corners, they’re thumb tack holes. I can’t believe I actually pinned the actual drawing! I know, how lame! I’m obviously going to be cropping this when I’m finished.

Tiger

February 15, 2007

Title: Untitled
Year: 2003
Medium: Graphite (8h to 9b)
Format: 14″ x 17″, unframed

Details: For the life of me, I can’t remember exactly when I drew this. And it’s unfinished so I never dated it so I’m guessing as to the year. Oh well.

Leopard and Prey

February 6, 2007

Title: Untitled
Year: Unknown
Medium: Graphite (2h to 6b)
Format: Approx. 11″ x 8″, Sketch Journal #3

Details: I’m actually not sure when I drew this piece, but I’m pretty sure it was prior to 2000. It is one of many unfinished drawings of mine. The shading of the part of the tree to the right of the boar has been added with Photoshop (by my brother Vince) so only the digital version is “complete”. Gotta love computers! I also think that in the photograph I drew this from had the bottom half of the boar hanging off the other side of the tree because I’m pretty sure the leopard didn’t just drag the head of the boar up there. That would be slightly pointless. So… apparently I failed to draw that part in as well… Oh well, it’s still a cool drawing. Around this time period I had this weird obsession with drawing large cats… in case you hadn’t noticed already.
